1/15th, f8, ISO 125, 17mm, Aperture Priority
This photo was taken while walking. With a tripod I could have spent hours playing with the quality of this light, and undoubtably got a better picture. But I’m happy with this as something that was ‘snapped’ on the run.
The key here is to be able to handhold at slower speeds. It is worth practicing this technique. Stop and let the heart beat calm down a little. Breath in and then exhale. Press the shutter while not breathing.
A monopod attachement on my Pacer Poles can be useful but not in portrait mode!
I regularly shoot at 1/15th and am even luckier sometimes at speeds a little slower! The new image correction lenses now available can give you an additional 2 stops to play with and in these situations this can be remarkably helpful.
What you loose by not using the tripod is the ability to frame really effectively. When shooting handhold take a little time to check composition, vertical alignment and so on.

I’m a 51 year old Nottingham lad living in Leicester, but I’ve fond memories of visiting friends in Much Wnelock and Wellington as a child. I remember walking up the Wrekin, and going to some old mines somewhere near Wenlock Edge to collect mineral samples and explore. I’ve recollections of finding arsenic ore, identifiable by the smell emitted when we struck it with a hammer.
