Damn ….

Email today from the Challenge people. Have missed out on the draw again, so no me next time — well unless I’m high up on the waiting list.

Time to start thinking about an alternative. No Bob and Rose either so no podcasts next year. Probably.

I know there are a lot of folk who were thinking about it for for the first time. Who got in?

Two weeks across Wales would be good. Coast to coast somewhere new.

  2. Andy says:

A possibility Martin. I’m off to Brazil over New Year and would like to go back to the Pyrenees at some point in the summer. Am wondering about the Sutherland Trail (plus hills) or Cape Wrath during Challenge time. Or the Stevenson trail in France has been on my list for a while and would fit nicely into the slot!

  3. Rob Hausam says:

I’m in again. I’m definitely sorry that you and Bob are not. If you really don’t make it in from the standby list, I might try my luck at doing recording for some podcasts. I did a little for my own use while we were walking during the first days of the Challenge this year, and it worked prety well.

More on the bright side, might this raise the odds for the Alaska trip we’ve been talking about?

  4. alan.sloman says:

That’s rotten luck Andy (and Bob too)
Don’t give up on the standby list – I have got in half a dozen times from the list over the last fifteen years. I understand that this year it might be tougher though, as more have been accepted at the outset.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for a good number on the list for you both.

  5. PhilT says:

So at what point do you get your standby list position? I assumed it was kind of immediately. Sad times, Mr Howell, sad times.

  6. andy says:

A couple of weeks I think Phil.

  7. Hendrik M says:

Sorry to hear, Andy, though on the other hand it opens up other possibilities.

  8. Stuart says:

Couldn’t you just walk across Scotland at the same time as the Challenge?

  9. Laura says:

Oh dear – I’m not in either.
Had thought about the possibility but now it’s happened I feel quite miserable.

  10. Peewiglet says:

Come on, Andy and Laura. No despairing, now. Postitive thinking! There’s a very good chance you’ll still both get in.

I hate this business of people not getting through the draw :(

  11. Zip says:

Why don’t you just tag along on your own, Andy?

You’re more than capable of planning and doing it; the organised process is just to check peoples plans, ensure safety etc. Team up with Bob etc if you wish…there are a few options but going through the “official” process is not obligatory.

  12. George says:

Sorry to hear you didn’t make the cut; hopefully you’ll get a nice low number on the stand-by list. :-)

    Hello,

Not only was it one of Stevenson’s earliest works, and much admired by John Steinbeck, but it is considered a pioneering classic of outdoor literature, setting the standard for the whole travelogue genre. By presenting hiking and camping outdoors as a recreational activity, Stevenson’s hiking was in many respects the catalyst for the whole back-to-nature and modern hiking movement.

Yes, a great book and a fine trek through the Cevennes that is fast becoming a classic. I thoroughly recommend it after hiking it with the local British experts, The Enlightened Traveller. See:

    Cheers,
