That's a stalkers' path up Carn Liath and it's been there since before munro mania caught on. Agree though, the car parks are getting fuller these days but you can miss the crowds by simply taking a different route up.

I don't recall anything like this in 1986, the last time I climbed Carn Liath - just a quiet lane, gulls on the lochan complaining about my intrusion and the whole of Beinn a' Ghlo to myself. I descended to Loch Loch and climbed Glas Tulaichean et al. the next day. Fine Munro bagging done back in the days when unpleasant criticism was aimed at anyone who admitted to bagging. I fear that rushing up a disintegrating track from a car parked in the closest lay-by will reinvigorate the antipathy towards baggers. That scar really is hideous.

I haven't read Chris Townsend's column in TGO yet, but if everyone adopted an exploratory approach, particularly when combined with a backpacker's linear route, the only erosion would be round the summit cairn. And the day's experience would be unforgettable.
