It’s been a bit quiet around here recently. Apologies. On Saturday I’m off to West Cork for a week. There will be some walking I guess although this is not primarily a walking holiday. There will be things and people to photograph, music to be made and walks to be had. This part of the world has some stunning coastal footpaths and there are good hills within a reasonable drive.
The next few days will be taken up with studying Paddy Dillon’s Irish books and the maps. I browsed through Coastal Walks and Mountains the other day and thoroughly enjoyed them. There’s a quirkiness and eccentricity about Paddy’s books that is quite appealing. Mind you, that’s Paddy — quirky and eccentric.
Reading these books — as opposed to just picking out walks — gives you a real insight as to how Paddy travels around, keeping costs to a minimum and cramming as much into a couple of weeks as is possible.
So, I shall be in Ireland with friends. But Paddy will also be coming along for the ride. And what’s bad about that!
Sounds a great destination and happy travels.
It is a lovely place. I’ll try and capture some of the spirit of it when I come back. It won’t be all about walking, but are people interested in hearing about it?
It’s good to hear the non-walking stuff too, Andy – I have just returned from a trip to the Lakes, where we had a wonderful time with not too much walking at all!
Funnily enough, I believe you Al
I am defiantly interested in hearing about it Andy. Culture and history are part of the landscape we walk through. It takes time to stop and enjoy it. On the Pennine Way years ago I stopped to visit museums and find out about the history and culture of the Pennines. Adds to a walk things like that. Like I said happy travels.
Ireland is stunning and I am sure that you will have a great time. Just make sure you pack those waterproofs and loads of cash as Ireland at the moment is not cheap. Paddy Dillon’s books are great. I can also recommend Joss Lynam’s Best Irish Walks, sadly no photos but loads of ideas there to make you get your boots on. Helped me plan a few walks in Connemara.
