Sloman: He’s Off!

The big bloggy news of the day is that Alan Sloman has finally set off on his Lands End to John O’Groats trek, which takes in a TGO Challenge crossing of Scotland for good measure.

When Alan announced his venture I was more than happy to make a decent contribution towards his charitable funding target. Of course, the fact that there was a good cause involved helped, but I felt that this would be money well spent, that Alan’s trip would prove to be great entertainment as he mobile-blogged his way through the country. And it already looks as if I was right.

I first came across Alan when I was planning last year’s TGO Challenge. I was rather amazed at his ability to navigate across the Highlands of Scotland, by pub, in the same way as many people do the same in, say, the suburbs of central London. This ability has already been revealed on day one of the blog.

So, this lunchtime finds Alan in a pub in Newlyn. He complains about mud, lots of Cornish mud. Cornwall is famous for tin? (The tin mines were exhausted a long time ago). Still, he has two pints of Young’ s special, fish soup and garlic bread, gets to know the owners Moira and Alan and enters into debate with a group of local fishermen.

And then he tells us about it. Which is great because at – say – three in the afternoon you can make yourself a cup of coffee and settle down to see what Alan’s being doing at lunchtime!

Perfect timing and perfect entertainment

It’s only day one and I think I’ll be sad when it’s finished.
