Podcast: Learning From New Zealand

By Andy | March 25, 2009

For many around the world the Government of Helen Clarke in New Zealand was something of an inspiration. Clarke’s Labour Party led a series of progressive coalition governments that set about rebuilding the country— both socially and economically — and blowing away years of right wing, National Party, government. But after nine years in power Labour was defeated, in 2008, by the National Party in a campaign that many see as inspiring David Cameron’s Conservatives.

Marion Hobbs was Cabinet Member for Environment through much of Clarke’s government. Marion now lives in the UK and recently she sat down to reflect on the experience of Labour in New Zealand and to consider the lessons that can be learned in the UK as we too set out to fight resurgent, populist, right wing opponents at the next General Election.
