ALTERNATE TUNINGS

Anyone who begins to seriously explore the steel strung guitar will want to explore the world of open - and alternate - tunings, sooner rather than later.

Over the last decade or so there has been a explosion of high quality manuals with clear tableture that helps newcomers explore open tunings. But often I think that there is a problem with learning these tunings from books.

It is important to get the feel of each tuning. Each has their own distinct sound and character. There is the funky drive of open G ande more mellow sound of Open D. And then there the others, for example, the complex and sometimes disturbing sound of DADGAD. Open C tunings sound compeltely differerent again and often work well when mimicking the human voice.

You'll learn a lot by just playing around on the fret board, developing a natural rythmn and building up you speed at the same time.

Over the next few weeks I'll be putting up some simple tunes and simple soundfiles that help you with yout initial exploration.

t the moment there is not much here except this piece in DADGAD tuning (recorded on a portable player). This tune utilises the simple chord shapes that you would use on dropped D (standard with string 6 down to D) - the D, G and a 5th fret D. When exploring for the first time use your regular chord shapes and see how the new tuning changes the sound.
