EDIROL R09

The new personal, digital, recordeds have been creating quite a lot of excitment recently. There are a number of interesting models on the market from companies including M Audio, Edirol and Zoom. I've been using an Edirol R09 for the last couple of months and have found it to be something of a revalation.

What's the fuss about?

These machines are truly quick and easy to use recorders that are great recording tools, ideal as a kind of musicians audio note book. While the Edirol is pocket sized it can turn in a big performance. The machine can record in mp3 format but it can also record in uncompressed .wav format and can sample at 24 bit or 16 bits at up to 44 hz (higher audio quality than a CD).

The machine comes with a very decent pair of built-in mics, but an external mic can be added via a small stereo jack. I've used a cheap AKG mic to record pretty good quality audio for podcast interviews. I've been using the built in mics for recording my guitars.

HOW DOES IT SOUND?

I hope to post some sound files up here for you to listen to. Here's one to be getting on with (no real title I'm afraid).

These tunes was recorded with little care made to mic positioning and recording levels - the mics were aimed at the 14th fret and angled away slightly from the soundhole. These are straight .wav files with no processing or EQ applied.
