The Inov's performed wonderfully (see blog for detailed views and comments). I find them to be more comfortable and safer than boots on uneven ground. You're feet do get wet but this is really no hardship and becomes an asset when you get to rivers and burns - you just walk though. The Inovs are designed to deal with water - they dry quite quickly - and there is no problem with blisters, etc. Not for everyone I guess, but I rather have wet feet in these than wet feet in boots.

The Smartwool socks work well with the Terrocs. I walked in one pair and kept the other, dry, for evenings and villages. They did get a bit clammy. I did have a little athletes foot early on. I treated my toes with some Boots cream and they made a point of exposing my feet to the air in the evening and NOT sleeping with socks on during the night. This airing made a big difference to my feet and - after adopting this procedure - had no more problem with athletes foot.

The X Socks I bought in Braemar. I'd heard of these before but had never seen them in the flesh. They are a little odd as they are completely synthetic. But they were the perfect match with the Terrocs, lighter, quicker drying, more hygenic and far better on tarmac.

Trail shoes are not boots and are not as durable. Clambering through heather for a couple of days knocked the uppers about a bit. Mine were not new and have completed about 500 miles - they are now trashed. In my view the advantages outweigh this lower level of durability. The soles were in fine condition and the shoes perfectly functional at the end - but if you chose to use them, make sure you're walking in a reasonably new pair.
